Most medical educators also serve as advisors to their learners. Directly or indirectly, and regardless of the audience—medical students, residents, fellows, or faculty—medical educators must develop rapport and engage in productive advising conversations. It takes time, skill, and practice to elicit information from advisees and ensure you’re identifying the key issues and providing sound guidance. This session is designed for medical educators to maximize their effectiveness using strategies to foster meaningful advising conversations.

Target Audience

All faculty and residents are welcome to attend these sessions.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this course, the learner should be better able to:

  1. Describe strategies for developing rapport and engaging in productive conversations with advisees/mentees
  2. Describe the non-directive approach to career advising
  3. Demonstrate how these techniques are applied to career advising conversations among learners at various levels.
  4. Provide medical educators with tools for improved and more powerful questioning
