This lecture provides medical professionals with best practices for working with patients with substance use disorders and/or those experiencing overdose based on the updated CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain. Key topics include understanding the definition, manifestations and impact of stigma, the human side of overdose prevention and public health, why choosing the “right” words matters, and strategies to address stigma in and out of the work environment.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and residents and fellows in Rhode Island specializing in primary care, family medicine, general medicine, pediatrics and emergency medicine. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After participating in this educational initiative, the learner should be better able to:

  • Recall the definition, manifestations, and impact of stigma.
  • Understand the human side of overdose prevention and public health.
  • Recognize why choosing the “right” words matters.
  • Implement strategies to address stigma in and out of the work environment.

METHOD OF PARTICIPATION AND HOW TO RECEIVE CME CREDIT

There are no fees for participating in and receiving credit for this activity.

  • Review the activity objectives, faculty information, and CME information prior to participating in the activity.
  • Complete the pre-test
  • View the CME presentation
  • Complete the post-test
  • Complete the CME activity evaluation in order to receive a credit certificate.
    • Credit claiming is available at the end of each module.
