ForwardBetter Together: Putting Team Science Theory into Practice to Enhance Your Research
Medical research continues to move away from the traditional "independent investigator" model, and toward collaborative approaches that integrate diverse disciplines with traditional biomedical sciences.
The National Institutes of Health established team science approaches as a major goal in its 2003 Roadmap. Yet, despite educational efforts and funding incentives, barriers toward achieving this goal remain. Many investigators are not aware of how to implement team science approaches into their research, or utilize available support.
In this workshop, Debbie Cornman, PhD and Katie Sharkey, MD, PhD will discuss the latest findings in the “science of team science,” and teach investigators how to implement strategies and techniques for successful team science approaches into their own research.
Target Audience
All faculty, researchers, and affiliated staff at Brown, URI, and the affiliated hospital systems who are interested in team-based science approaches. Physician scientists and junior faculty are encouraged to attend.

Debbie Corman, PhD
Associate Director of InCHIP and a researcher in health behavior change. She has extensive expertise in the areas of HIV prevention and ARV medication adherence, having developed and evaluated theory-based interventions in these areas for nearly 15 years both nationally and internationally. In addition to the work she has done in the U.S., Dr. Cornman has conducted research in India, South Africa, Mozambique, Uganda, and Ethiopia. She has trained hundreds of healthcare providers in HIV prevention and ARV medication adherence interventions worldwide, has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, has written many training manuals, and has given numerous presentations in the areas of HIV risk reduction and ARV medication adherence worldwide.
Katie Sharkey, MD,PhD
A physician-scientist with more than 25 years of experience in sleep and circadian rhythms research and clinical training/board certification in internal medicine, psychiatry, and sleep medicine. Dr. Sharkey serves as Assistant Dean for Women in Medicine and Science at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. There, she has developed career advancement and leadership programs for BioMed faculty and trainees. Dr. Sharkey has held elected leadership positions in international professional sleep societies (the Sleep Research Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine) since 1999 and her behavioral science training has provided her with expertise in interpersonal communications and conflict management. Finally, Dr. Sharkey collaborates across a wide variety of disciplines (i.e., engineering, anthropology) and training levels (undergraduates to faculty) in her research, and currently participates in two projects that directly involve patients as active research partners, in addition to serving as an active member of an international research consortium dedicated to a better understanding of postpartum depression.
