COR 12.08.20: Making Sense of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Kids

December 8, 2020

Pediatric mental health disorders are common and the majority of US youth with mental illness are untreated in the US. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects approximately 2% of children and adolescents in the US.  While psychosocial and pharmacological treatments are effective for pediatric OCD in trials, and there is broad scientific agreement on how best to select and sequence these treatments , they are underused in community settings. This lecture will orient participants to the phenomenology, assessment, and treatment of pediatric obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).  Care will be taken to conduct experiential exercises to facilitate didactics and to direct participants to local treatment resources.

Target Audience

Physicians, Psychologists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and Nurses specializing in Primary Care and Pediatrics.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be better able to:

1. Review common features of OCD in youth, differential diagnosis, and common comorbidities
2. State core components of evidence-based treatment of pediatric OCD
3. Identify local OCD treatment resources
