The 2019 Trans Health Conference is sponsored by the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Rhode Island College School of Social Work & School of Nursing, and TGI Network of Rhode Island. This is the fifth annual Trans Health Conference in Rhode Island that is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of the transgender and gender non-conforming community. Our goals are two-fold, to increase the number of health professionals across the care continuum who feel comfortable and confident providing quality care for trans patients, as well as increase the trans community members knowledge, self-efficacy, and advocacy skills through educational sessions and connection to community resources.

Target Audience

Physicians specializing in primary care, obstetrics, endocrinology, & emergency medicine, nurses, psychologists, physician assistants, social workers, licensed mental health providers, medical students, residents, fellows, and members of the transgender and gender non-conforming community.

Learning Objectives

Primary care providers should be able to:

  • Describe professional guidelines established for the appropriate care of transgender adolescents and adults
  • Identify the risks/benefits of hormone therapy, design a plan of care that incorporates above guidelines
  • Compare and contrast the unique primary care needs of male to female and female to male transgender patients
  • Participate in advanced medical care cases

Mental health providers should be able to:

  • Identify mental health issues unique to transgender individuals and better understand role of the mental health professional through transition
  • Recognize sexual health needs of transgender patients and gain confidence in addressing these with patients
  • Participate in advanced behavioral health cases 

Public health professionals should be able to:

  • Describe ethical considerations related to research and research findings in the transgender community
  • Recognize the present state of research with regards to health needs and health outcomes in the transgender community
  • List new developments in US and RI state trans health public policy and implications for health care access and the health status of members of the transgender community

Members of the transgender community should be able to:

  • Identify and discuss their legal needs and best strategies to meet these needs
  • Discuss social identities and ways to develop positive masculine and feminine identities, as well as the importance of the intersection of race, ethnicity, and class in these identities 
  • Identify everyday issues faced by transgender community members and ways to address
