Session Description

IHP has identified depression as a major driver of healthcare utilization and cost among members. At the same time, IHP participating providers have expressed a lack of confidence in managing severe depression in the outpatient setting. Management of severe depression in primary care involves a team approach. This session will provide guidance in relevant areas, including depression screening and suicide severity risk assessment; responding to potential risk factors and enacting a treatment plan; creating a follow up plan to monitor treatment response; and offering opportunities to bridge care and continue to assist with care facilitation to specialty mental health as indicated.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, the learner should be better able to: 

  • Use the PHQ-9 to screen for depression in the primary care setting
  • Utilize the Columbia – Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) to screen patients who present to primary care with a primary behavioral health condition and/or screen positive for depression
  • Understand effective risk response procedures for assisting patients who have been assessed as high risk for suicide
  • Create a follow up plan for patients with severe depression to monitor response to treatment, confirm treatment plan, and bridge care/assist with referrals as indicated.
