Symposium Overview
The Rhode Island Stroke Symposium seeks to integrate the most advanced research and medical knowledge in the treatment of stroke and provide a forum for dissemination of that knowledge. The purpose of the program is to provide an update on state-of-the-art acute stroke evaluation treatment as practiced at a Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Rhode Island Hospital is the oldest Comprehensive Stroke Center in New England and a high-volume center that provides care for patients with acute ischemic stroke, intraparenchymal hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. In this program, participants will be exposed to a variety of disciplines including neurocritical care, stroke neurology, neuro-interventional radiology, advanced practice professionals, registered nurses, and other members of the stroke team at Rhode Island Hospital. The goal of the activity is to enhance the care of the stroke patient in Rhode Island and the wider New England region.
Target Audience
Regional primary care and specialist physicians, including emergency physicians, neurologists, cardiologists, radiologists, surgeons, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, advanced practice professionals, residents, fellows, medical students and other allied members of the healthcare team.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the symposium, participants should be better able to:
1. Recognize the critical role of EMS and advanced practice professionals in the evaluation and management of large vessel occlusion stroke
2. Outline best practices for in-hospital code strokes
3. Mitigate in-hospital complications post-stroke
4. Apply best practices in the evaluation and management of acute stroke in the emergency department
5. Select patients with large core infarcts and mild stroke symptoms suitable for mechanical thrombectomy
6. Identify and manage patients with early neurologic deterioration in lacunar stroke
7. Describe strategies to enhance the efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis for acute stroke
8. Summarize the evolving concept of ESUS (embolic stroke of unknown source)
9. Outline the use of cilostazol in secondary stroke prevention
10. Discuss the interplay of diet, lifestyle, and brain health
11. Identify appropriate timing of when to (re)start anticoagulation after ischemic stroke
12. List adjunctive strategies for stroke recovery
13. Identify comprehensive rehab practices post-stroke
14. Select patients who may benefit from alternatives to long-term anticoagulation for stroke prevention
15. Describe the concept of code ICH for initial evaluation and management for intracerebral hemorrhage
16. State the latest updates in minimally invasive surgery for intracerebral hemorrhage
17. Describe latest updates in the management of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
18. Discuss evaluation and management of patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms and arterio-venous malformations
