Symposium Overview
Now in its fourth year, the Rhode Island Stroke Symposium seeks to integrate the most advanced research and medical knowledge in the treatment of stroke and provide a forum for dissemination of that knowledge. The purpose of the program is to provide an update on state-of-the-art acute stroke evaluation treatment as practiced at a Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Rhode Island Hospital is the oldest Comprehensive Stroke Center in New England and a high-volume academic medical center that provides care for patients with acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. In this program, participants will be exposed to a variety of disciplines including stroke, neurology, neuro-interventional radiology, advanced practice professionals, registered nurses, and other members of the stroke team at Rhode Island Hospital. The goal of the activity is to enhance the care of the stroke patient in Rhode Island and the wider New England region.
Target Audience
Regional primary care and specialist physicians, including emergency physicians, neurologists, cardiologists, radiologists, surgeons, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, advanced practice professionals, residents, fellows, medical students and other allied members of the healthcare team.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the symposium, participants should be better able to:
- Recognize the critical role of EMS in field diagnosis, triage, and treatment of acute stroke
- Outline best practices for emergency department stroke triage and care
- Explain how to improve stroke management at a statewide level
- Outline the evolution of nursing in stroke care
- Delve into the latest advances in endovascular stroke treatment

- Select patients and strategies for high-yield cardiac monitoring post-stroke
- Study latest updates in cerebral venous thrombosis
- Apply novel findings in evaluation and treatment of cervical artery dissection
- Offer insights into contemporary evaluation and management of Moya-moya disease
- Navigate stroke in pregnancy
- Recognize psychological effects of stroke on the individual and their families
- Identify the role of early mobilization post-stroke
- Evaluate and manage dysphagia post-stroke
- Select advanced neuroimaging options in acute stroke
- Discuss options for advanced neuroimaging for intracerebral hemorrhage
