Learning Objectives

After participation in this session the learner should be better able to : 

  • Understand why organophosphate-based flame retardants (OPFRs) are used to comply with furniture- and vehicle-specific flammability standards at the California- and federal-level, respectively
  • Describe the mechanisms of developmental toxicity and exposure of Southern California commuters to a high-production volume OPFR frequently detected within humans across the United States.
  • Understand how this research may provide the basis for regulatory agencies and industry to begin pivoting toward alternative, lower-risk OPFRs.
