POSTPONED - Using implementation science principles and tools to improve healthcare and mental health practices

January 12, 2026

POSTPONED - Please check back for a new date.

Overview

It takes an average of 14 years for 17% of research findings to be applied in routine clinical practice. Implementation science strives to improve the uptake and sustained use of evidence-based practices in mental health and healthcare settings. This 1-hour, 30 minute training teaches clinicians and clinical scientists the basics of implementation science – and some practical approaches for applying implementation science tools and mindsets to implement or improve evidence-based practice in their settings. Attendees will be introduced to a practical, 4-step process, “explore, prioritize, plan, evaluate,” through experiential exercise using a case study. Using the case study as a touchstone, the workshop will review practical ways to identify and organize barriers and facilitators to evidence-based practice implementation.

Target Audience

This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

1. Define implementation science and its application to healthcare settings

2. Discuss the benefits of a system-level approach to understanding implementation challenges

3. Describe common barriers and facilitators to implementation of evidence-based practices

4. Describe a 4-step model for practical implementation
