Overview

Narrative Medicine is the practice of investing in deep attention to experiences, emotions, stories, and creating a representation of these observations, usually in written form. This practice can improve skills of observation, communication, reflection and awareness. Narrative Medicine practices improve affiliation with patients and families and contributes to well being and resilience for providers, educators, and learners in the health professions. 

Target Audience

This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees. 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Introduce the scope and process of Narrative Medicine, its background, principles and practice. 
  2. Understand the importance of stories in the illness experience and their centrality in connecting to others. 
  3. Experiment with the use of Narrative Medicine as a personal and professional development tool for health professionals
  4. Experience the process of creating a Narrative Medicine product
