Practicing Clinical Sexual Medicine Part 1: History of the Field and Best Practices for Assessment

May 27, 2026

Provided by The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University

In Collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior

This activity will be presented via zoom from 3:00-5:00 pm.
Pre-registration is required.

Overview

Clinical sexual medicine is a rare specialty within the field of healthcare, with few providers receiving evidence-based training within this clinical area. However, many healthcare providers have patients with a wide variety of sexual health needs, yet feel at a loss with how to discuss these sensitive issues with competency and ease. This gap is particularly evident among behavioral health providers, who typically follow a biopsychosocial approach when treating health problems. Part 1 of this 2-part educational series addresses the history of clinical sexual medicine as a field, strides in this clinical area, and assessment tools to adequately and competently address the sexual health needs of patients in a comfortable, sensitive, and approachable manner.

Target Audience

This activity is designated for psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify the key developments in the field of clinical sexual medicine, including when and how the field began, pivotal leaders of the field, and challenges facing the field today
  • Apply assessment questions and tools for obtaining a sexual history, and differentiate between which questions/tools are beneficial for a brief or comprehensive history.
