Symposium Overview
Now in its sixth year, the Rhode Island Stroke Symposium seeks to integrate the most advanced research and medical knowledge in the treatment of stroke and provide a forum for dissemination of that knowledge. The purpose of the program is to provide an update on state-of-the-art acute stroke evaluation treatment as practiced at a Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Rhode Island Hospital is the oldest Comprehensive Stroke Center in New England and a high-volume academic medical center that provides care for patients with acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. In this program, participants will be exposed to a variety of disciplines including stroke, neuro-interventional radiology, emergency medicine, stroke nursing, advanced practice care, and neurorehabilitation. The goal of the activity is to enhance the care of the stroke patient in Rhode Island and the wider New England region.
Target Audience
This symposium is designed for regional primary care and specialist physicians, including emergency physicians, neurologists, cardiologists, radiologists, surgeons, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, advanced practice professionals, residents, fellows, medical students and other allied members of the healthcare team.

Describe a pathway for assessment of acute dizziness
Navigate imaging tools for acute stroke evaluation
Review key updates from the 2026 Guidelines on the early management of patients with acute ischemic stroke
Learn how to evaluate and manage acute stroke in the Neurocritical Care Unit
Discuss management of stroke at a primary stroke center (PSC)
Summarize key aspects in evaluation and management of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis
Become familiar with managing stroke patients with cancer
Review treatment options for lipid lowering therapy for lipoprotein A in stroke patients
Delineate evaluation and management of sleep disorders after stroke
Compare benefits and risks of iv thrombolytic use for patients with acute stroke on direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) therapy
Adopt strategies to standardize ICH care through an acute response team
Explore surgical treatment options in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH)
Navigate anti-thrombotic and interventional therapies post ICH
Survey neuropsychiatric outcomes after ICH
