DPHB Master Clinician Series - Gun Violence: How Well Can We Assess Risk?

Mental health professionals want to increase their skills in assessing patient potential for gun violence, and learn Strategies to address working with patients who own firearms to reduce the risk to themselves and others. Concerns regarding increased patient risk of harm to self and others are increased when working with patients who have access to firearms.  This interactive, case-based discussion will provide an overview of assessment tools and strategies to use with patients who own firearms to identify and mitigate risk of harm.

Target Audience

Rhode Island Psychiatrists & Psychologists.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe potential risk factors for gun violence in mental health populations
  • Develop skills to screen for the potential for gun violence in mental health populations
  • Develop strategies to use in the clinical encounter to reduce the potential for gun violence in our patient populations
