2019-2020 Doctoring Program Faculty Development

Provided by the Department of Medical Education

The faculty physicians who teach in this course are all qualified to teach basic clinical skills and advanced communication skills to first- and second-year medical students, mostly based on their past experience as students/learners and clinical work-based precepting. However, this series is designed to ensure that faculty understand and teach the specific competencies that students should have by the end of Years 1 and 2. The series is also needed to help physician and social and behavioral science faculty to improve their co-teaching, group facilitation, and assessment skills. The goal is for standardization of course content and facilitation techniques across the 18 small groups in each year. The program will also help to build consensus around best practices in many of the core areas.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the new recommendations and develop systems in practice to increase male vaccination. 
  2. Describe roles and responsibilities of the SBS and MD faculty and students.
  3. Faculty should be aware of course content and expectations.
  4. Use the ((ask, tell, ask" and GO GREEN models to provide specific, timely, measurable feedback.
  5. Use the SHARP model to respond to learner feedback.
  6. Apply principles of structural awareness to clinical skills training
  7. Recognize unconscious bias in clinical precepting.
  8. Recognize how anchoring bias effects student grading.
  9. Compare and contrast assessment and evaluation.
  10. Understand common pitfalls for grading students based on personality and not observable behaviors.
  11. Apply a structured checklist guide as a teaching tool in small group facilitation.
  12. Practice providing feedback on difficult topics using role play.
