Racial and ethnic health inequity is a public health crisis that has been well documented for decades, and societal racism, including incarceration, is an important contributor. Medical students from historically under-represented groups experience discrimination, isolation, and different expectations that negatively impact their training. Moreover, physicians from under-represented groups often experience unique barriers and greater challenges in their work environments. Addressing these inequities requires cultural change involving the entire academic enterprise, including increasing awareness of contributing social factors such as mass incarceration.

This film screening and discussion of the Netflix documentary, 13th,  highlights another symptom of racism, mass incarceration. In this thought-provoking documentary, scholars, activists and politicians analyze the criminalization of African Americans and the U.S. prison boom.We will host a simulcast and discussion of the documentary as acknowledgment of the inequities that continue, and thus will help us better understand the circumstances of our vulnerable patients.
