Allies not Adversaries: Teaching Health Care Providers, Lawyers, and Social Workers to Support Individuals with Criminal-Legal Needs
Live in person at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Live Streamed via Zoom Meeting Platform
Overview
Involvement in the criminal legal system is one of the most fundamental upstream determinants of health, often impacting other crucial determinants of health like access to stable housing and employment. Fortunately, a model for helping patients successfully navigate legal issues that negatively affect their health does exist in medicine: the medical–criminal legal partnership (MCLP). This conference will teach healthcare providers, lawyers, social workers, community health workers, and others how they can work together to advocate for individuals enmeshed with the criminal-legal system and thereby improve health outcomes.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians and lawyers in Rhode Island and nationwide interested in working collaboratively to improve health outcomes and prevent re-incarceration for patients involved in the criminal-legal system.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this activity, the learner should be better able to:
- Explain the value and purpose of inter-professional collaboration between criminal defense lawyers and healthcare providers - as well as social workers, peers, and case managers
- Identify common and ethically complex barriers to this collaboration
- Define the roles and responsibilities for criminal defense lawyers, healthcare providers, social workers, peers, and case managers in a medical-legal partnership
- Integrate recovery science as a paradigm for understanding the link between substance use, mental health, and criminal activities
This activity is funded in part by The Galkin Fund
