Ovarian Cancer in Iowa
Live Webinar via Zoom Meeting
12:00 - 1:00 PM CT (1:00 - 2:00 PM ET)
Ovarian cancer is the 5th leading cause of cancer death of women nationally. Referral of stage IB-IV ovarian cancer patients to a gynecologic oncologist for surgical care is recommended by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Surgery by a gynecologic oncologist results in superior survival rates for ovarian cancer patients and increased access to up-to-date treatment options and pathology/tumor boards. However, despite the known benefits of surgical care provided by a gynecologic oncologist and the NCCN recommendations, not all patients are receiving surgery from gynecologic oncologists.
This webinar is an opportunity for providers to learn more about ovarian cancer in Iowa, the benefits of referrals to gynecologic oncologists, and gain access to new provider handouts developed to help with referrals in the state of Iowa.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for healthcare providers in Iowa that diagnose ovarian cancer including physicians, physician-residents and physician-fellows in primary care, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, surgery, and general medicine; nurse practitioners; physician assistants; medical students, and other allied members of the healthcare team.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this webinar, the learner should be better able to:
- Describe the epidemiology of ovarian cancer.
- Identify the need for referral of ovarian cancer patients to gynecologic oncologists for surgical care.
- Discuss the benefits of a surgical referral to a gynecologic oncologist for ovarian cancer patients.
- Employ new resources available in Iowa to discuss the importance of surgical care by a gynecologic oncologist with patients with confirmed or suspected ovarian cancer.
