04.06.21: Part 2 - Safety Planning Intervention for Suicide Prevention: A Skills Training

April 6, 2021

Part 2 of a 2-part Skills Training
Completion of Part 1 in either Live or On-demand Format is required

Suicide rates have increased by nearly 30% across all age groups in the last two decades, yet suicide is preventable.

Although providers are trained in Safety Planning, it has been reported that almost 70% of these providers have indicated a need for further training. Additionally, after a patient leaves an acute clinical care setting, it is not always clear how the Safety Plan is best utilized, with many patients reporting that they are not asked about their Safety Plan following
their visit to an emergency department.

This skills training is designed to clear confusion and help outline how to implement with fidelity, an approach to patient care that incorporates utilization of the safety plan. Closing this gap in patient care can assist physicians and allied healthcare professionals associated with a patient’s care to close the gap, which can literally be a matter of life and death.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for primary care and family medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, psychologists, and social workers providing routine care to patients.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, the learner should be better able to:

  • Describe the rationale for Safety Planning and its component parts.
  • Demonstrate what effective Safety Plans look like and how to collaborate with patients to create one.
  • Describe strategies to facilitate patient use of the Safety Plan.

Acknowledgement of Funding

This training is funded by Grant SM-17-006 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.
