Brown Neurosurgery-Orthopedics CME Accredited Cadaveric Spine Course for Residents and Fellows

Fall River, MA US

This Course is jointly provided by the Brown Office of Continuing Medical Education and the Divisions of Spine Surgery within the Brown University Departments of Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Surgery

This course is designed to provide neurosurgical and orthopedic attendings and trainees in spine surgery with the opportunity to improve their skills.
It is well understood that the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing spine surgery are correlated with the proficiency and expertise of the treating surgeon.  However, as a surgical skill set is not an inherent trait and expertise is acquired with a learning curve, it may be postulated that acquisition of the skill set in the laboratory setting on cadavers rather than live patients may reduce the risk of operative-related complications in patients undergoing spine surgery.  Additionally, the learning of neurosurgical techniques and the introduction of new surgical procedures to a spine surgeon's armamentarium is facilitated by practice in the laboratory setting on cadaver specimens. As a part of our Spine Workshop, new techniques in spine surgery and minimally invasive surgery will be discussed and demonstrated by Brown Neurosurgery and Orthopedics faculty members.

Target Audience

Neurosurgery & Orthopedic Spine Attendings, Fellows, and Senior Residents interested in spine.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
•Understand the surgical anatomy & approaches to the operative spine from occiput to the pelvis
•Describe indications for surgical stabilization and instrumentation in patients with trauma, deformity, tumor and degenerative diseases of the spine
•Compare and contrast minimally invasive and traditional open approaches to spine surgery
•Outline the diversity of surgical treatment of spinal disorders and promote evidence-based strategies towards understanding of how surgical intervention effects pain and functional outcomes in spine patients
