In addition to COVID-19 updates, this session will consist of an update from Dr. Matt Murphy. Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations have faced and continue to face discrimination in their families, communities, workplaces and within the healthcare system. Minority stress theory conceptualizes how chronically high levels of stress caused by social stigmatization can lead to poor health outcomes among marginalized groups, particularly SGM populations. When stigmatization occurs in the healthcare setting, this can compound poor health outcomes and lead to negative training experiences. Dr. Murphy will define terms related to care of SGM patients and discuss practical ways in which providers of all specialties can use affirming language when working with SGM patients in clinic.
