In addition to COVID-19 updates, this session will provide part 2 of an overview of the issues surrounding stigma and bias that patients with sickle cell face across the medical setting, from urgent, to primary, and emergent care. It will also focus on ways in which providers can take action to reduce bias in their practice and improve the delivery of care to, and outcomes of, patients with sickle cell disease.

Target Audience

This educational initiative is designed for all licensed healthcare professionals practicing medicine in the state of Rhode Island.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this educational initiative, the learner should be better able to:

  • Describe current COVID-19 epidemiology, testing, vaccine and science trends occurring locally and worldwide. 
  • Identify the effects that stigma, bias and racism have on the care of patients with sickle cell
  • Outline ways in which providers can act to combat stigma, bias and racism in order to provide high-quality care to, and improve outcomes among, their patients with sickle cell
