The Charles J. McDonald Lectureship is an annual educational opportunity designed for dermatology professionals to learn about new and emerging diagnoses and new treatments for established diseases and an understanding of how this knowledge will assist in patient education and care.
Target Audience
Dermatologists and other interested dermatology healthcare professionals
Learning Objectives
The understanding and use of the visual arts in medicine is underutilized and can be beneficial in treating patients with skin of color.
- Apply close-looking skills and tolerance of ambiguity in the arts to describe and communicate the patient’s physical exam and to support a broad differential diagnosis
- Correlate Close-looking skills in the arts to develop and communicate empathy and cultural competency for patients of all skin colors and ethnicities
- Recognize and describe the shades of life-threatening conditions of erythema, pallor, and cyanosis in darker skin types
- Practice close-looking skills and utilize art museums to help stay in the present and develop mindfulness to prevent physician burnout
- Illustrate the evidence and need for the arts and humanities in all levels of medical education
