In addition to COVID-19 updates, this session will consist of a structured interview between Drs. McDonald and Chan and Dr. Lisa Iezzoni on the topic of addressing physician attitudes about disability and ways in which providers can increase their cultural competence around disabilities.

Dr. Iezzoni has spent more than three decades conducting health services research focusing on two primary areas:  risk adjustment methods for predicting cost and clinical outcomes of care; and health care experiences and outcomes of persons with disabilities.   After spending 16 years as Co-Director of Research in the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Iezzoni joined the then Institute for Health Policy as Associate Director in 2006 and served as director of the newly-named Health Policy Research Center from 2009-2018.

      Target Audience

      This educational initiative is designed for all licensed healthcare professionals practicing medicine in the state of Rhode Island.

      Learning Objectives

      After participating in this educational initiative, the learner should be better able to:

      • Describe current COVID-19 epidemiology, testing, vaccine and science trends occurring locally and worldwide. 
      • List the limitations of the public data regarding COVID among racial and ethnic minority groups
      • Recognize the prevalence of disability; every physician sees someone with disability in their practice
      • Identify that people with disability experience disparities in healthcare, and how that can impact outcomes in a deleterious way
      • Summarize physicians’ attitudes about disability, including legal obligations under ADA.
