11/4/24 - Teaching for Retention: Applying the Science of Learning to Everyday Teaching
Monday, 11/4/24
5:30-7:00 pm
222 Richmond Street, Room 280
Refreshments will be provided
We spend much of our time teaching learners, but how successful are we in actually making sure that our learners are learning what we teach? The science of learning has clarified best practices for teachers to help what we teach our learners “stick”. This workshop will address the strategies that are evidence based for enhancing the retention of learning. The goal of these strategies is to move learning from short term memory into long term memory so it is more easily accessed. This reduces the cognitive load for our learners and allows learners to build a more robust scaffolding of knowledge that facilitates ongoing learning. The strategies that will be discussed include: retrieval practice (deliberate attention to making learners recall information previously acquired) ; elaboration (explaining the why) ; generation (forcing an educated guess) ; spacing (teaching over time is more effective than massed learning) ; and interleaving (comparing and contrasting different but related concepts). Each concept will be introduced and participants will have the opportunity to develop strategies to implement these concepts in their own learning.
Target Audience
This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- List the evidence based teaching strategies that facilitate retention of learning
- Identify ways that these strategies can be used in their everyday teaching
Refreshments will be provided.
