11/6/25 - Lessons Learned from Implementing Competency-based Medical Education Assessments: Supporting Faculty and Student Success
Thursday, November 6, 2025
5:30-7:00pm
The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Room 275
Overview
This interactive faculty development workshop shares lessons from implementing Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) assessments in the Doctoring 1 and 2 courses at The Warren Alpert Medical School. By integrating both faculty and student perspectives, the session explores what worked, what didn’t, and what needs to evolve to build shared expectations, reduce bias, and support meaningful feedback and learner progression. Participants will engage with real-world examples, reflect on their own assessment practices, and explore ways to transition from traditional evaluation models to CBME-aligned assessments anchored in sub-competency frameworks. This session is designed for educators who use or develop assessment tools and are interested in better aligning them with educational outcomes and learner progression.
Target Audience
This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
1. Describe key faculty and student lessons from a CBME assessment pilot in preclinical medical education.
2. Reflect on how CBME-aligned assessments differ from traditional tools in terms of structure, fairness, and feedback.
3. Apply CBME principles to analyze existing assessment practices.
4. Identify ways to improve learner and faculty alignment around expectations, feedback, and progression.
5. Develop next steps for their own teaching context using sample cases or existing assessment experiences.
