4.09.25 C&A | Adolescent Substance Use in the Context of Psychopathology: Predictors, Consequences, and Neurobehavioral Correlates

This presentation will provide a brief background regarding why adolescence is associated with more adverse outcomes for substance use initiation compared to adulthood. Psychopathology-related predictors and consequences of adolescent substance use will be reviewed, with a focus on cannabis use but also describing alcohol and nicotine use.
Target Audience
This session is designed for Rhode Island physicians (primary care and specialists), psychologists, social workers, residents, fellows, medical students, and all other allied health professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be better able to:
Describe how adolescence is a vulnerable time period to initiate substances due to substantial development.
Identify mental health-related predictors of adolescent substance use.
Provide theories and empirical data to demonstrate how psychopathology may develop after initiating adolescent substance use.
