5/19/26 - Educating with Impact: Strengthening trainee/student - preceptor dynamics in longitudinal clinical placements
Tuesday, May 19, 2026
6:00-7:00pm
The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Room 275
Overview
This interactive workshop will use case-based discussions and a strengths-based approach to equip UME/GME leaders and preceptors with the tools to anticipate and address challenges in preceptor-student dynamics. Participants will explore a practical framework to identify and diagnose these challenges while learning best practices from U.S.-based institutions. Topics will include managing time pressures during busy clinical sessions, balancing oversight and autonomy in patient encounters, and creating opportunities for continuity of care across the health system. The workshop will also offer strategies for setting clear expectations within preceptor-student dyads, addressing mismatches in learning and communication styles, and effectively intervening when students encounter bias from patients, whether witnessed or not. By the end of the session, participants will leave with actionable strategies to support preceptor-student relationships throughout the LIC year and proactively address common challenges in these partnerships.
Target Audience
This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.
