Learning Objectives
After participating in this activity, attendees should be better able to:
- Understand why organophosphate-based flame retardants (OPFRs) are used to comply with furniture-
and vehicle-specific flammability standards at the California- and federal-level, respectively. - Describe the mechanisms of developmental toxicity and exposure of Southern California commuters
to a high-production volume OPFR frequently detected within humans across the United States. - Understand how this research may provide the basis for regulatory agencies and industry to begin
pivoting toward alternative, lower-risk OPFRs.
