Learning Objectives

  • Discuss that CPAP therapy has not been shown in randomized controlled trials to reduce the incidence of future cardiovascular events in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
  • Analyze biases and other factors that may have led to lack of positive effect of CPAP on cardiovascular risk prevention
  • Make an assessment as to whether the evidence to date is adequate to determine if CPAP has utility in cardiovascular risk prevention in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
  • Describe the adrenal dysfunction that occurs in critically ill patients
  • Examine literature on risks/benefits of steroid administration in septic shock
  • Discuss data on ideal timing and dosage of hydrocortisone use as well as combination agents (i.e. fludrocortisones, thiamine, vit c) with hydrocortisone in septic shock
