Overview 

This program describes the current evidence for treatment of opioid use disorder in the Emergency Department and outlines practices for clinical management of patients with opioid use disorder. Practical instruction for initiation of medications for use disorder is provided. The goal by the end of the lecture is that providers will feel comfortable offering and providing a spectrum of evidence-based care for patients with opioid use disorder in the ED including medications for opioid use disorder naloxone, harm reduction resources, and linkage to follow up substance use treatment services and peer recovery specialists.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, the learner should be better able to: 

  1. Identify management strategies for patients with opioid use disorder  experiencing acute pain or undergoing surgery
  2. Describe the current state of evidence around peri-operative management of patients taking buprenorphine
  3. Access the various resources available to aid in management of patients with opioid use disorder experiencing acute pain or undergoing surgery
