July 2022 Cross-Racial Dialogues: Utilizing Racial Identity Theory and the Social Interaction Model to Move Toward an Anti-Racist Clinical Treatment and Communication
This virtual program will be held on July 18, 2022, 4:00 - 5:30 pm
The DPHB Anti-Racism Steering Committee and the DPHB Education Committee both recommended a follow-up workshop after April 2021’s successful microaggressions workshop given by FACE Race Consulting. This particular workshop is specific to mental health providers and researchers, given that the interactions we have with patients are often more personal and more sensitive information is discussed, than in the typical medical encounter.
The 90-minute workshop will provide an overview of racial theory & the social interaction model, & how these concepts apply to clinical and research supervision & treatment in mental health settings. Participants will learn skills for self-reflective practice and cultural humility and how these can be applied in cross-racial dialogues with trainees and patients. Specifically, the workshop will help develop faculty members’ ability to initiate and cross-racial dialogues from a stance of cultural humility in order to provide culturally competent supervision and mental health care.
Enrollment is limited.
The proposed activity will be of particular benefit to psychiatrists and psychologists in DPHB.
After participating in this workshop, the learner should be better able to:
- Describe racial identity theories and the social interaction model to increase knowledge and awareness of self-reflective practices for mental health professionals.
- Demonstrate application of both the racial identity theories and the social interaction model and how it applies to cultural humility within clinical practice.
