6/4/24 - Writing Effective Narrative Comments for Clerkship Students

June 4, 2024

Tuesday, 6/4/24
5:30-7:00 pm
222 Richmond Street, Room 280
Zoom option available
Refreshments will be provided

This workshop, facilitated by clerkship directors in core rotations, endeavors to enhance the quality of written evaluations crucial for the ongoing feedback and learning of medical students.

The session will kick-off with a collaborative exploration of the attributes contributing to the efficacy or ineffectiveness of narrative comments* and then transition to a didactic overview of the new core competencies and competency descriptions. Time will then be dedicated to working in think-pair-share groups to identify commonly observed sub-competencies pertinent to their engagement with students and collaborate in generating descriptions of directly observed behaviors to create a customized evaluation template that can be used for future assessments. The session will wrap up with a review of sample narrative evaluation comments, enabling participants to discern best practices to perpetuate and common pitfalls to circumvent in their evaluative endeavors.

*Please note this session has an emphasis on crafting narrative comments over assigning numeric ratings of student performance.

Attendance in person is encouraged; however, there is also an option to livestream the workshop.

This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.
