Women in Leadership Panel (AMWA 2024)
Providence, RI US
Although women enroll in medical school at approximately the same rates as men, women physicians continue to lag behind their male counterparts when it comes to leadership positions. Furthermore, women physicians continue to experience gender bias in the workplace including harassment and pay inequity, and trainees are acutely aware of these gender imbalances (Lukela, 2019). Few training programs aimed towards professional advancement for women are geared towards physicians-in-training (Warner, 2023). In this panel discussion, women physician leaders will discuss their leadership trajectories with particular attention to promoting professional advancement and leadership skills throughout a woman’s career trajectory.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Describe different entry points and trajectories of leadership positions
- Identify elements of successful leadership including networking, advocacy, and negotiation
- Discuss the resources available to support emerging leaders
- Implement strategies for successful leadership in a range of settings
