Research from cognitive psychology can be used to inform educational practices. In this professional development talk, Dr. Megan Sumeracki and Dr. Cindy Nebel will describe two strategies that have robust evidence to support their use. They will demonstrate and provide concrete activities and flexible guiding principles for medical educators to immediately apply to their instructional practice, as well as provide additional resources.
Target Audience
All faculty and residents are welcome to attend these sessions.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this course, the learner should be better able to:
- Describe how cognitive psychologists develop and evaluate learning and teaching strategies
- Describe the two key strategies discussed: Spaced practice (sometimes called distributed practice), and Retrieval practice
- Implement development of a plan for application of the strategies in their own teaching
- Explain how medical student, residents and fellows can use the strategies independently to guide learning
