Dermatology for Primary Care Providers: How to Think & Act Like a Dermatologist

Providence, RI US
September 21, 2019

Up to two thirds of patients with a primary skin complaint present to primary care providers. This one day course is designed to enhance primary care providers’ knowledge and comfort with dermatologic issues. Through case based discussions, we will focus on the approach to evaluating these patients, differentiating between the most common skin diagnoses, and choosing treatment options. We will cover skin signs of systemic disease, how to differentiate benign from malignant lesions, and dermatologic emergencies.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, residents, fellows and medical students

Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate primary lesions and describe the approach to a patient with a rash, including creating appropriate differentials
  • Describe appropriate counseling for prevention of skin cancer
  • List the most common types of skin cancers, and describe the most common features to differentiate benign from malignant lesions
  • Describe different treatment options for the most common skin disorders, and choose when each might be most appropriate to use depending on the type of presentation
