Overview

Engage in dynamic discussions and gain fresh perspectives on themes of resilience, cultural identity, and the search for home. In her memoir, Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, the author of "Up Home," brings a unique perspective to the narrative, having herself journeyed from a humble upbringing in the rural South to becoming the first Black president of Brown University.

 

Target Audience

This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees. 

Learning Objectives

After participating in this event, learners should be better able to: 

  • Consider the implications of the book's messages and lessons for individuals, communities, and society as a whole.
  • Examine Dr. Simmons’ treatment of themes such as belonging, loss, and the search for home while drawing connections to personal experiences or broader societal issues.
  • Evaluate Dr. Simmons’ journey and the impact of external influences on her growth and identity on her trajectory to becoming a leader in academia.
