6.01.22 OWIMS Professional Development Course: Screening & Moderated Discussion of Film "Cured"
Please join SPECTRUM, ODMA and the Office of Women in Medicine & Science for a film viewing and moderated panel discussion of the film Cured.
This event will take place live, in person at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Overview
It is estimated that there are more than 2 million elderly people in the United States who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ+). This cohort of LGBTQ adults were exposed to high levels of social stigma and discrimination that has led to social and health disparities. Moreover, multiple epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to die by suicide and experience other forms of violence than their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts. Currently, medical training does not address sex and gender medicine comprehensively, with most medical schools offering between 2-5 hours of educational content on topics related to sex and gender minorities. As a consequence, providers report lack of knowledge and LGBTQ+ patients report experiencing bias that discourages them from seeking care.
NOTE: Cured is available to view at any time via the Brown library. You have to use your Brown login to access it at this link.
Target Audience
This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.
Learning Objectives
After watching the film and participating in this discussion, learners should be better able to:
- Describe the discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ people in the 1950-1960s and the efforts of the medical community to pathologize gay and lesbian patients
- Discuss the events leading up to the American Psychiatric Association Board of Trustees’ landmark decision to remove homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual in 1973.
- Recognize continued health disparities experienced by LGBTQ+ patients and discrimination of LGBTQ+ health care workers
- Identify health inequities specific to transgender and gender non-conforming youth.
