Columbia University
Bernard is Vice Chair of Research and Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Columbia University, where he holds the Tushar Shah and Sarah Zion Endowed Chair in Emergency Medicine. He has research interests in neurological and psychiatric emergencies, particularly with regards to stroke management, as well as clinician psychological and cardiovascular health. He is currently the PI or contact PI of 3 R01s from the NIH, including the largest prospective longitudinal clinician psychological and cardiovascular health study being done in the United States. Administratively he oversees the Research Division of Emergency Medicine at Columbia University where he started as the inaugural Vice-Chair in 2018 and grew the program from unranked to #4 in the United States by Federal Funding for 2022. He studied for his master’s at Oxford University as a member of Balliol College, his PhD in Psychology from Harvard, his MD from Stanford and completed his Emergency Medicine residency training at Harvard Medical School (MGH Brigham Health). Prior to medical school he served as a professional yachtsman and also as a sailboat delivery captain doing deliveries internationally.
