5.11.23 OWIMS Book Club (Session I- Live in-person option): Invisible Women Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men

Providence, RI US
May 11, 2023

This event will take place live, in person at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, 3rd floor RIMI

Overview

Imagine a world where your phone is too big for your hand, where your doctor prescribes a drug that is wrong
for your body, where in a car accident you are 47% more likely to be seriously injured, where every week the
countless hours of work you do are not recognized or valued. If any of this sounds familiar, chances are that
you’re a woman.
Invisible Women shows us how, in a world largely built for and by men, we are systematically ignoring half the
population. It exposes the gender data gap – a gap in our knowledge that is at the root of perpetual, systemic
discrimination against women, and that has created a pervasive but invisible bias with a profound effect on
women’s lives.

Target Audience

This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this event, learners should be better able to:

1. Describe the impact of gender bias on health and well-being outcomes in women.

2. Recognize that the lack of data about women’s needs, preferences, life experiences, and concerns
causes everything from inconvenience to physical harm and death for women from everyday products,
living areas, transportation systems, the workplace, and other situations.
