5/4/26 - The Mentor Mindset: From Feedback Toward Support to Motivate Our Learners
Monday, May 4, 2026
5:30-6:30pm
The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Room 275
Overview
In this workshop we will describe the concept of mentor mindset and how it applies to medical education and training, using the ideas put forth in the book 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People by David Yeager. Through didactics and interactive exercises during this workshop, we will create a guide for best practices for being “warm demanders” as educators – someone who sets high expectations from their trainees while providing high support for them. We will use the mentor mindset framework to showcase what this support looks like for our learners, covering the domains of authentic questioning, responding to stress, refocusing on purpose, and lastly, creating a sense of belonging. This support lends itself to educators being able to provide wise feedback to their learners, helping cultivate a growth mindset and increasing their motivation during training. This workshop will be 40% didactic and 60% interactive, with the interactive component focusing on developing frameworks of support for our learners.
Target Audience
This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.
