11.9.23 OWIMS RI Women's Health Initiative Series: Hijab in Medicine: The Landscape of Surgical versus Non-Surgical Specialties
Please join Office of Women in Medicine & Science and Office of Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for a live in person event.
This event will take place live, in person at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Overview
Over the past decade, there has been an increase in female physicians and medical students in the United States. This trajectory raises questions regarding the current composition of female Muslim physicians. Many female Muslim physicians wear the hijab as part of their religious identity, where they cover their hair and arms. Due to this, hijab-wearing women have reported experiences where the hijab was an obstacle during their medical training, specifically in the operating room. This presentation examines the current demographic landscape of hijab-wearing women within US surgical and non-surgical residency programs and will discuss barriers and solutions in medical education.
Target Audience
This session is open to all faculty, staff and trainees.
