This event will take place live, in person at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Overview
In Rhode Island abortion remains legal until viability, and medication abortion accounts for over half of abortions, although prescribing has remained concentrated in the abortion clinic setting, where wait times may be long. Patients have asked, “If you are a doctor and these are pills, why can’t you prescribe them for me?” Prescribing medication abortion pills in a primary care setting is safe and many primary care clinicians are willing but training is rare. This workshop will offer primary care and other front-line clinicians the knowledge to safely prescribe medication abortion pills and the resources for implementation.
Target Audience
This session is open to Warren Alpert Medical School faculty and trainees as well as local primary care and emergency room clinicians.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this event, learners should be better able to:
1. Describe the landscape in the US and Rhode Island around access to abortion
2. Explain the mechanism of action and protocol for prescribing medication abortion pills, including risks, benefits and contraindications.
3. Practice prescribing medication abortion using an easy and a more challenging clinical case, and address questions related to triage and potential complications.
4. Identify local resources to assist with prescribing medical abortion pills in their practices
