Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) Healthcare Professional Education Series: Updates in Opioid Prescribing and Substance Use Disorder Treatment

This activity is jointly provided by the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the Rhode Island Department of Health

Funding provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Overdose Data to Action in States Grant

Fentanyl and other potent synthetic opioids are driving overdose deaths in the US, with 106,000 drug-involved overdose deaths in 2021 alone. In Rhode Island in 2022, there were 436 drug-related overdose fatalities, with fentanyl involvement in 75%.

These modules will provide a summary of the 2022 CDC Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids, which includes recommendations for opioid prescribing for acute, subacute, and chronic pain. Healthcare professionals will learn how to apply the recommendations as flexible standards of care to enable patient-centered decision-making, taking into account patient well-being. Providers will learn strategies for developing a comprehensive pain management plan for acute, subacute, and chronic pain including a framework for reassessment including evaluating patient-centered treatment outcomes.

Providers will learn to screen for and diagnose opioid use disorder and stimulant use disorder. Guidance for development of treatment and referral plans will be provided. Available interprofessional and specialty resources to help providers care for patients with chronic pain and/or substance use disorders in Rhode Island will be highlighted.

The overall goals of this series are for healthcare professionals to be better able to:

  • Explain the purpose of the 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline and describe the 12 recommendations in the 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline
  • Identify interprofessional care coordination strategies that support implementation of the 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline
  • Describe how to screen for and diagnose opioid use disorder and stimulant use disorder

This activity is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and residents and fellows in Rhode Island specializing in primary care, family medicine, general medicine, pediatrics, and emergency medicine.
